Welcome Back, Sara Swartz, LMHC!

25 Years of Experience in Compassionate, Motivational Therapy in Massachusetts

June 23, 2026

Handel Behavioral Health is excited to welcome back Sara Swartz, LMHC, a highly experienced therapist in Massachusetts with more than 25 years of experience across hospitals, crisis services, community mental health, and outpatient counseling.

Having our friends come back to work with us is always a pleasure and shows how aligned and consistent we are in our values and in our commitment to our community here in Massachusetts.

Coming Back Home to Western Massachusetts

After living and working  in Vermont with her husband for the last several years, they decided to come back home to Western Massachusetts to be closer to family and reconnect with the community where she grew up.

Growing up with a father who farmed and a mother who worked as a nurse, Sara learned early on the importance of hard work, empathy, and caring for others. Those values continue to shape her approach as a therapist today.

“I developed a really strong work ethic from experiencing the way that they approached their work, and the importance of caring for people and doing the right thing was something they valued and instilled in me growing up.”

And as anyone who spends time in Western Massachusetts knows, there is something special about the combination of vibrant communities, natural beauty, and opportunities for connection that make this region feel like home. Sara really enjoys spending time outdoors to help her maintain balance and stay connected to what she values most.

25 Years of Experience in Diverse Populations

Over the past two and a half decades, Sara has worked in nearly every corner of the mental health field, including:

  • Inpatient psychiatric hospitals
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
  • Crisis intervention services
  • Community mental health programs
  • Clinical leadership and administration
  • Individual outpatient therapy

Within these various settings, Sara has supported clients from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, identities, and life stages, including adolescents, college students, adults, older adults, and geriatric patients. She recognizes that every person’s experiences, values, and identity shape the way they experience mental health and healing.

Her diverse experience enables her to understand mental health concerns from multiple perspectives and develop practical, individualized treatment plans.

“I really enjoyed the complexity of acute care work because you saw so many different people, different diagnoses. I got to work with a team of providers, psychiatrists, and nurses, so there were many opportunities to collaborate. I loved the pacing, thinking on your feet, and problem-solving.”

Building the Foundation and Providing Structural Support

Sara understands the importance of balancing structure with compassion and creating a sense of safety, predictability, and trust that allows clients to explore difficult emotions while building confidence in their ability to move forward.

Many people begin therapy knowing they want things to improve but feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, depressed, or uncertain about their next steps. Sara helps clients slow down, clarify what matters most to them, and transform broad hopes into realistic, measurable goals.

Sara helps clients create the roadmap to achieve their goals and provides ongoing support to help them get there.

“If clients could create the structure that they needed for themselves, they probably would just do it. So it’s a balance of being flexible and meeting the client where they’re at, but also creating a solid and safe foundation for them to do the work.”

Not Just a Therapist, But I’m a Cheerleader!

One aspect of Sara’s practice that clients often appreciate is her focus on the connection between mental and physical well-being.

In addition to being a licensed mental health counselor, Sara is also a yoga teacher and an Inferno Pilates instructor. Her background in wellness and movement informs her understanding of how emotional health, physical health, stress, and resilience are interconnected.

Sara incorporates a whole-person perspective into therapy and often helps clients explore how lifestyle factors contribute to emotional wellness.

“I think it really informs my motivational style and helps me be a good cheerleader.”

Sara offers a supportive environment that blends accountability, encouragement, and practical problem-solving for those seeking motivational therapy in Massachusetts.
