Emily Malo, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) offers a holistic and integrative approach to mental health treatment.

Her extensive experiences as an RN and APRN, working in both hospitals and community care clinics equips Emily with both the clinical skills of nursing and the advanced knowledge of psychiatric and mental health care.

She prioritizes building positive and trusting therapeutic relationships with clients, listening attentively to clients concerns and empowering them to take an active role in their mental health journey.

Emily believes that though medications can be necessary at times, the integration of therapy sessions, lifestyle modifications, and self-care practices is key to achieving positive mental health outcomes. She’s passionate about offering every person the opportunity to heal, recover, and improve their lives with a supportive and empowering psychiatric mental health care experience.

We sat down with Emily to learn more about her background in the field and approach to working with clients online in Massachusetts and in-person from our Wilbraham office.

What is a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner?

A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who provides psychiatric care to individuals with mental health concerns. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners provide a broad spectrum of mental health support, including diagnosis of psychiatric disorders, management of mental health conditions, and the delivery of psychotropic medications.

What inspired you to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner?

After graduating from nursing school, I immediately went into psychiatry. I’ve always been passionate about mental health awareness, as well as sensitive and curious to discover the lived experiences in every human being, knowing that people are not defined by their mental health condition.

In my work as an Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), I learned how to help patients access healing and recovery through prevention and education, as well as assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions.

Working directly with individuals of ages and backgrounds, experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions, taught me the importance of patient-centered care.

I’m a firm believer in continuous learning and service work. I participated in a nursing trip to Ghana to aid in creating a health clinic and received an award for my work in a hospital using verbal de-escalation. I also currently teach at a small University in Connecticut.

How would you describe your approach to psychiatric mental health care?

I’m easy-going and personable with clients, as to create a nonjudgmental and supportive environment for our work together.

Aware of the stigma behind mental health treatment and psychotropic therapy, I strive to respond to and understand clients’ emotions and concerns with respect and compassion.

My role as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner involves conducting thorough assessments to diagnose mental health conditions accurately, and then creating an individualized treatment plan that includes psychotropic medications, lifestyle guidance, and counseling.

I work collaboratively with clients to ensure they’re involved in the treatment plan and making meaningful progress towards their goals. I’ll also refer clients to therapists with HBH who match their unique mental health needs and goals, to ensure comprehensive care.

What mental health conditions do you offer treatment for?

I provide mental health treatment and medication management to adult and older adult clients struggling with:

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I love continuously learning, holding space for clients free of judgement, seeing that I can make a difference in clients lives, and witnessing clients turn into healthier versions of themselves.
