Staying Above the Turbulence
Brigid McBride, LICSW, brings a uniquely grounded and authentic presence to HBH.
In my interview with Brigid, I found her use of the self-descriptor “irreverent” interesting, but realized the power it could have. For some, beginning talk therapy can seem burdensome; you want to be heard, but not pitied. You don’t want your story to be shocking or upsetting, but to be met with a clear head.
In her words, “it’s not my first rodeo”; Brigid’s experiences allow her to be the approachable and realistic therapist many are looking for.
Grounded in Experience
Brigid’s passion for helping others started in the heat of the kitchen at a nursing home, where she discovered a deep love for listening to people’s stories and observing human behavior.
The experience invigorated Brigid to pursue her Bachelor’s degree in Spiritual Psychology at UMass Amherst, and immediately on to complete her Master of Social Work at Springfield College. Over the past decade, she has built a diverse clinical foundation, working in individual therapy and support group settings, with a focus on co-occurring substance use disorders and trauma.
Uplifting Others
Brigid went on to develop curricula for and facilitate group therapy in dual diagnosis Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). One of her most rewarding experiences was during her work with adolescents in a residential program for substance abuse disorders. She became the birthing coach for a 16-year-old, helping her manage the pregnancy without the use of pharmaceuticals, and teaching her how to keep herself grounded and safe throughout.
Unpacking Trauma
Initially surprised by the complexity of substance use disorders, Brigid soon recognized the powerful undercurrents of trauma in many of her clients’ lives. Her trauma-informed approach led her to become certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which has expanded her ability to help clients process trauma in a safe, effective way.
Putting Your Oxygen Mask On First
Brigid is focused on harm reduction and setting realistic, short-term goals. She meets clients where they are, affording them the autonomy to lead the way with the understanding that they are the experts on themselves. The main goal is always to establish stability, connection, and self-compassion in their lives. Only then can one start taking the small but meaningful steps to recovery.
A Safe Space to Land
Brigid acknowledges how hard it can be to open up and strives to maintain a calm, affirming, and safe place for clients to do so. Brigid makes sure to clearly explain her trauma-informed and strength-based approach in Session One so clients know what to expect moving forward.
Brigid utilizes various types of evidence based therapy, including DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), and motivational interviewing. She specializes in depression and anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, PTSD, LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, and more.
