Shavon Meyers, Licensed Mental Health Counselor brings deep compassion and lived experience into her work as a therapist.

With a diverse background and personal insight into life challenges, Shavon’s passion for mental health counseling lies in helping people examine and improve their lives.

Shavon takes an eclectic and person-centered approach to counseling, tailoring each session to the clients’ individual needs. She integrates evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and mindfulness-based techniques, prioritizing rapport building and the clients’ lived experiences.

For seven years, Shavon has supported clients of all ages and backgrounds struggling with various mental health and life challenges, including substance use disorder, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), parenting challenges, career difficulties, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD/ADD).

Shavon also has extensive management experience in Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI) and has worked as the clinical director of a residential substance use disorder and mental health treatment facility.

We sat down with Shavon to learn more about her person-centered approach to working with clients online and in-person from our Wilbraham office.

What inspired you to become a therapist?

Growing up in a diverse background and complex family dynamics, I got to experience first-hand the emotional challenges people and families face. I followed my calling to help others make lasting and substantial changes in their lives and have found it deeply rewarding to support people since.

What has your experience in the field involved?

My career as a therapist began in the outpatient setting, where I mentored new therapists and case workers. Later, I became the supervisor and then the regional director of Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI), which serves MassHealth children and families with behavioral, emotional, and mental health needs. I worked as a therapist for Northeast Family Services, which provides affordable mental health services to families of various backgrounds. I also worked as the clinical director of a residential substance use disorder and mental health treatment facility. Throughout all of my management and supervisory experience, I carried a case-load of clients and tailored my approach to meet their unique needs.

How would you describe your therapeutic style and approach?

My approach to therapy is eclectic and person-centered. I believe there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to counseling, as each person, couple, and family brings different experiences, values, and needs to the therapy space.

The client is the expert of their own lives, which includes their families, partners, histories, and various systems which impact their wellbeing. My goal is to deeply understand the whole client, including their relationships, family systems, cultural background, and the broader systems that shape their wellbeing.

Depending on the clients’ needs, I’ll offer a variety of evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Psychodynamic therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and mindfulness-based techniques.

Above all, I believe that a deep understanding of the client is the foundation for making meaningful and lasting changes, both inside and outside of sessions.

What mental health conditions do you specialize in?

I’m here to support individuals, couples, and families of all ages and backgrounds who experience the following mental health conditions and life challenges:

What’s your favorite part about working with clients?

I love witnessing those breakthrough moments that clients experience when they’re telling their story or processing the emotions behind a traumatic event. There’s something really powerful about watching a client connect the dots or realize for the first time how a past traumatic experience is shaping their present lives.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering therapy?

Even if you’re unsure or don’t know what you need from therapy, give yourself the space for reflection, growth, or self-improvement. Therapy doesn’t always have to be about addressing something “bad” or traumatic; it can be a tool for helping people become a better version of themselves.

Just like when you see the doctor to take care of your physical health, it’s important to check in on your mental and emotional health as well.
