Grief & Loss Counseling in Massachusetts
Therapy for Grief and Loss in Massachusetts
Grief and loss are inescapable parts of life. Losing a loved one, experiencing a breakup, separating from a friend, or ending a meaningful career are challenging parts of life. We may struggle to imagine a new path forward.
We may feel angry, overwhelmed, confused, guilty, or hopeless after a significant loss. We might ask ourselves, Will I ever feel like myself again? Or, Am I ever going to move on from this?
The types of grief we go through and the thoughts and feelings we experience are unique to each of us. It may take more or less time than expected for the answers to become clear, and for us to live with joy and purpose again.
The most important thing to remember is that we are not alone in our suffering.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing complex emotions after a loss, our highly-trained and compassionate therapists are here to support you. By working with a mental health professional who specializes in grief and loss counseling, you will find the validation and support that you need to heal from your grief and move forward in your life.
Above all, our counselors are here to help you live the meaningful lives that you deserve.

What is Grief?
Grief is a natural reaction to loss. It comes in many forms, and there is no one way or right way to experience grief.
We may feel guilty, angry, confused, doubtful, hopeless, extremely sad, and many other emotions.
There is no normal timeline for healing; it may take months or years to process and accept a loss in life.
Our therapists at Handel Behavioral Health are here to safely support you with active and compassionate listening, while guiding you towards healthy coping techniques.
What are the Five Stages of Grief?
The five-stages of grief, a model developed by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, author of the book, “On Death and Dying,” has been adopted by many as a way of thinking about grief.
The five stages include,
- Disbelief or Denial: in shock or not able to accept what has happened
- Anger: can be shown as being irritable or having general anger
- Bargaining: wondering what could have happened differently/“what if” questions
- Depression: feelings of sadness/irritability/numbness
- Acceptance: accepting the loss
You might not experience all five of these stages. Or, you might experience these stages at different times. You might also find that your feelings after a loss differ than those listed.
An often underrepresented stage of grief is called the yearning stage, which involves intense longing for something or someone we’ve lost.
There are also those of us who feel numb, or sense that we have no emotion at all.
No matter how you are feeling or where you are on your journey of healing, our therapists are here to walk alongside you, meet you where you are at, and help you navigate grief in a healthy way.
