Hannah Bowen, Licensed Clinical Social Worker aims to create a warm and authentic atmosphere for clients to process and express their thoughts and feelings without judgement or shame. She sees herself as a guide who works alongside clients, where their voice and intuition lead the way.
Hannah emphasizes meeting clients where they are and tailoring the approach to meet their specific needs. She specializes in trauma-informed care, with training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an intervention proven to aid in processing and integrating traumatic memories.
Hannah also has extensive training in approaches that aim to help clients gain greater awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in the here and now, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
Above all, Hannah strives to create a safe and nonjudgmental space for clients to show up just as they are.
We sat down with Hannah to learn more about her approach to counseling adolescents and adults online in Massachusetts and in-person from our Wilbraham office.
What inspired you to become a therapist?
My journey toward becoming a therapist began while working at a daycare with children who had experienced trauma and were navigating the adoption process. I became aware of the profound impact of early adversity, which sparked my initial interest in social work, particularly in the area of child welfare and DCF.
As time went on, I found myself drawn more to the clinical side of the work. I loved the relationship building and the opportunity to help people process their experiences more deeply.
What have your previous experiences in the mental health field involved?
Before joining Handel Behavioral Health, I worked in both community mental health and private practice settings. My time in community mental health was both challenging and inspiring. The work exposed me to a wide range of clinical situations but also came with limitations that made it difficult to grow in the ways I wanted to.
My experiences working in private practice allowed me to deepen my clinical work and focus more intentionally on trauma, which has since become my area of specialization.
Each experience offered valuable lessons and helped shape the therapist I am today.
How would you describe your therapeutic style and approach?
My therapeutic style is relational, collaborative, and grounded in a trauma-informed perspective. I aim to create a space where clients feel safe and comfortable to be themselves.
Rather than taking an authoritative role, I work alongside clients, focusing on how their life experiences have shaped them and helping them process those experiences without shame. While my natural style leans more casual and relational, I’m attuned to each client’s preferences. I’ll adjust my approach to meet people where they are, whether they’re looking for a more relaxed environment or a more structured dynamic.
I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help clients gain greater awareness of how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected in the here and now.
I’m also trauma-informed and recognize the lasting impact that trauma can have on a person’s sense of self. I have certification in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based approach for helping clients process and heal from traumatic experiences.
My integrative approach allows me to tailor therapy to each client’s unique needs and goals.
How do you create therapeutic relationships with clients?
The foundation for our work together is build on trust, respect, and flexibility. With that foundation, I believe clients can take an active role in their healing process.
What mental health conditions and life challenges do you offer therapy for?
I’m here to work with clients who may be experiencing the following mental health conditions and life challenges:
- Anxiety/Panic/Phobias
- Bipolar Disorder
- Depression
- Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD/ADD)
- Trauma
- LGBTQIA+
- PTSD/Acute Stress
- Anger Management
- Self-Harm/Self-Injurious Behaviors
What advice would you offer to potential clients?
I’d tell anyone who is considering therapy to come as you are. There are no expectations; approach therapy with honesty, openness, and willingness, and let yourself be real through the process.
What do you like about living in Massachusetts?
I’m originally from Connecticut, but having lived in Massachusetts for over two years, I’ve really grown to appreciate the openness and authenticity of people here. I’m also inspired by the opportunities and resources for mental health support in Massachusetts.
