A Man of Many Hats: Dan McGrath, LADC1

A Therapeutic Approach Informed By Lived Experience

May 1, 2026

Dan McGrath has been with Handel Behavioral Health for many years and has known the Handel family even longer.

After Dan’s interview, Jake Handel was happy to share some of his favorite Dan stories with me, from being Jake’s Sunday school teacher to his time living in San Francisco… the juxtaposition of these stories fully validating Dan’s claim that he has lived many lives.

We are thrilled to continue being a part of Dan’s story and hope that you have the opportunity to be a part of his next chapter, too!

Been There, Done That

When Dan began his educational journey, he studied Environmental Science. But, like many college students, he decided that it wasn’t for him and switched majors… a few times.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a long time,” Dan reflects. “It was trial and error.”

Queue the “fast-forward” clip of Dan trying everything from concrete work to UPS driver to camp counselor, living in 7 different states and visiting nearly all of them, and studying at multiple colleges before completing his degree and becoming a teacher…

Then, finally, he became the authentic, experienced counselor he is today.

Double-Dipper!

Dan has not only worked a variety of odd jobs, but has also worked as a counselor in a wide range of settings, including corrections and residential programs.

Most recently, he double-dipped his toes working full-time as a director at a residential treatment program and part-time as a counselor at HBH.

This experience, however, reminded him of what he really values: appreciating small moments, savoring life, and reducing unnecessary stress.

Dan made the conscious decision to return to full-time counseling, knowing that he could do the work he loves until the day he dies (or whenever we have to start Weekend at Bernie’s-ing him in sessions).

Forever The Student, Never the Teacher

Dan’s insatiable need to keep learning is his greatest asset and life philosophy (and maybe a condition not yet in the DSM-5).

Supporting individuals with complex histories, including incarceration and addiction, he understands that every person has something to teach if you’re willing to learn.

With all the hats Dan has worn, he has an incredible ability to connect with clients across professions, life stages, and identities. Whether someone is a young adult with no idea what they want to do with their life, or a seasoned professional navigating burnout, Dan understands the nuances of their experience because he has been there, done that!

First-Hand Experience

Dan speaks openly about his own history with trauma and burnout, including a period where he stepped away from work entirely to focus on his own healing. These experiences have given him the ability to understand his clients beyond what can be learned from a textbook.

Dan uses self-disclosure thoughtfully, always with the client’s needs in mind, creating space for authenticity and trust.

For many clients, knowing their therapist truly understands their struggles can be transformative. It levels the field and leaves no room for judgment, often leading to more open conversations.

Even without telling his story, Dan can use his experiences to inform how he approaches treatment and create more realistic goals.

Fixing the Stool

One of the holistic approaches that Dan uses with his clients is what he calls the “three-legged stool” of mental health. Each “leg” represents a key component of emotional well-being:

  • Biological factors (genetics, brain chemistry) — supported by medication, diet, and exercise
  • Life circumstances (environment, stressors) — addressed through acceptance and focusing on what can be controlled, such as with ACT
  • Thought patterns (fear-based or irrational thinking) — reshaped through approaches like CBT

When one leg is off, the whole stool is unstable. You have to look at all of them to find out which one needs a little folded-up piece of paper underneath it to create the stability it deserves.

And that little piece of paper may be a script, a grocery list, a self-affirmation, or a note-to-self to keep you grounded.

Taking It Outside

While traditional talk therapy is central to Dan’s work, he also embraces more experiential approaches.

One example is “Walk and Talk” therapy—outdoor sessions amidst the beauty of Western Massachusetts. Whether walking through a quiet trail or simply being present in nature, the goal is to engage the senses and create a different kind of therapeutic space.

“Being outside helps people slow down,” Dan says. “It gets them out of their heads.”

Dan believes that modern life often pulls people away from something essential to the human spirit, and that reconnecting with the natural world can be deeply grounding.

Connect with Massachusetts Counselor Dan McGrath

Dan believes that many of life’s struggles stem from a lack of connection, from feeling unseen or uncared for. He strives to create a space where clients feel safe and understood in order to rebuild one’s sense of worth and belonging.
