Caterpillar

Handel Behavioral Health is a leader in mental health services in Massachusetts. We strive to provide quality behavioral and psychiatric health services that are both timely and effective. We do so by hiring highly trained clinicians with years of experience in the field of mental health. Our mental health therapists, counselors, and psychiatrists in Massachusetts are among the best.

To this end, we have designed our office to be both a comfortable and welcoming environment to help facilitate the healing process. We also provide telehealth therapy services for both safety and convenience of those who cannot come to our offices.

How We Started

Our practice was founded by Dr. Greg Handel who has over 35 years of postdoctoral experience in behavioral health serving in a number of residential, vocational, inpatient , and outpatient settings. He also has over 30 years of experience in clinical supervision and program management.

During those years he has come to understand that overcoming life experiences that may contribute to emotional unrest cannot be achieved by an individual acting alone. Everyone who works at Handel Behavioral Health Services understands that it takes the help of caring and supporting people who have the know-how to help an individual develop a healthy mental perspective that will promote a meaningful and fulfilling life. The first office was located in Franklin. Since then three more offices were opened in Western Massachusetts in Amherst, Wilbraham, West Springfield.

Our Core Values

At Handel Behavioral Health Services we have and hold dearly to the core values that help define who we are. In support of this sense of identity, we strive to be reliable, team players, initiators, self-aware, relational, and motivated. Though it is not possible to always maintain these ideals, to the extent we do reflect these values, our organization moves forward toward the fulfillment of our mission.

When we are reliable, our clients can depend on our responsiveness to their needs with the competency of a well-trained clinician but also with the compassion of someone who can relate to their circumstances and cares for their well-being. Likewise, fellow clinicians can count on a listening ear that helps support them in their goal to care for others. That is why it is common to see one of our staff often poke their heads into their fellow clinician’s office to seek advice on a case.

A related trait is being a team player. A team member is someone who abides by policy, not in a legalistic way, but because it supports the greater good. We support one another by taking criticism and encouraging others. We do this out of a sense of mutual respect and appreciation for one another. We strive to be helpful even to the point of being self-sacrificial by putting the interests of others before our own. This is demonstrated in our counselors readily referring clients to one another if they feel a fellow clinician is a better fit. Our team players also take time out of their own routine to assist their co-worker with clinical input or to solve technical issues.

In the process, Our team demonstrates that they are initiators who use wisdom and enthusiasm to solve problems to institute solutions for the greater good of each other and the practice in general. Their passion for their work motivates our staff to be self-starters and self-sufficient in their pursuit to provide the optimal support and service to our clients. This includes a clinician who has her child client set up his toys in front of his laptop so the client can conduct play therapy via telehealth.

Our mental health clinicians practice their clinical skills in creative ways because of a self-awareness that balances confidence with humility. Our staff have refined their skills over years of implementing techniques that have shown to impact the lives of the clients they serve. But, at the same time, our clients are also self-reflective and always willing to learn. This is why our counselors look forward to staff meetings and are open and honest about how they conduct therapy while appreciative of input from the team. There is a level of trust between coworkers that allows for this vulnerability.

The trust that generates this vulnerability comes from the fact that our clinicians are relational in their orientation. We get along with others by being tolerant and focusing on each other’s needs. We value these relationships above any material wants that we have. That is why we enjoy our coworkers and clients alike. Our staff look forward to times that we get together, both socially and professionally.  Our clients report that they feel valued and this creates a critical bond between the therapist and client. And as a practice, growth and development will be motivated by a desire to serve and care for the emotional support of others. In this way people are valued over money.

It is this interest in people that motivates us and drives our high standards. This is reflected in how we present ourselves to our clients and each other. We present a professionalism that reflects our self-efficacy while also continually taking advantage of every opportunity to grow. In this continual growth we project an entrepreneurial spirit that drives us to be the best at our craft that we can be. Many of our clinicians are authors of articles and books that reflect both their scholarly work and their practical experiences in helping others.
